(male announcer) this is the bay area news station, kron 4 news starts now. >> bar scene in downtown walnut creek. close to three weeks ago, the police chief announced low staffing has led to the elimination of the downtown patrol program. new at 11.kron four's philippe djegal spoke with bar managere w doing their best to keep weekend nights peaceful. >> reporter: as part of their conditional use permit agreement, downtown walnut creek bar managers say they stagger closing times on busy nights.

shutting down sections of the bar every 15 minutes after one o'clock in the morning. having earlier last calls for alcohol. and closing down entirely before two o'clock in the morning. bar owners say they have noticed fewer officers patrolling downtown on foot on fridays, and saturdays, but because the downtown patrol program has been so successful over the past year. they say, so far, there hasn't been much violence. the police department is also located downtown. which allows officers to still respond to bar altercations quickly.

in walnut creek, philippe djegal, kron four news. more police - less crime. so far that appears to be the case. the mid market area of san francisco is home to a new police sub station. kron four's jeff bush spoke to local merchants in the area who say they have already noticed a difference. >> reporter: sixth street is one of the seediest areas in san francisco and has been known for being a high crime area of townbut, local merchants are hoping the new sub station and the 24 officers who work here will help change that.

suphi helim has owned this store on sixth street for the last 30 years and has seen it all. a lot of drug dealing, a lot of crime, a lot of stabbing, a lot of shop lifting, a lot of pick pocketing. suphi says he has noticed the increase in police since the station opened up on thursday. adel awadella just opened his pizza shop on sixth street and couldn't be happier with the sub station. yeah, they are walking around all over.daytime, i see them walking around back and fourth all over and there was a robbery here today and they were all over it. most people are happy with the station being in the neighborhood. >> do you feel safer knowing that the cops are right across the street? >> it's more safe but i wish they were open 24 hours. they're not.

>> reporter: that seems to be the biggest complaint. people say it's great to have the station here, and they have noticed a difference already but the station closes at 10:30 at night. the merchants in the area are hoping the hours will change and the police will stick around later into the evening. >> reporter: i'm jeff bush in san francisco, kron four news. >> a multi agency raid leads to nearly 20 arrests. it's all part of a multi- agency crime fighting plan called operation cease- fire. discussed >> reporter: this particular crime sweep is intended to help avoid a gang war between two violent groups. the 'money team' and 'case' gangs. kron4's terisa estacio has the details. you are looking at video taken from a multi agency raid conducted in oakland going after what some officials are calling some

of the cities most violent criminals. at a news conference friday. details were unveiled about how successful the raid was. >> 34 arrests. this operation was weeks in the planning. officials say they acted quickly based on alarming intelligence about the criminals. they were planning to act violently. as you can see in this video. state local and federal officials were involved in crack down. it is unclear right now, how many were arrested, but local prosecutors say they will do their best. >> we are going throught the files to charge. >> reporter: terisa estacio, kron 4 news. >> a san jose jury finds a former engineer -- accused in the 2008 shooting deaths of three colleagues -- guilty on three counts of first degree murder. now the jury is transitioning into the second phase of the trial

where they will decide if jing wu was insane when he committed the murders. wu reportedly begged for his job back before murdering three of his supervisors at his santa clara semi- conductor firm. he was convicted of special circumstances which means that he could get the death penalty or a life sentence without parole. tomorrow, some clouds. we will see some warmer conditions. the details on how warm it is going to get

in the next seven days. >> haven wildlife sancuary say they will re-open on sunday. this comes just four days after volunteer dianna hansen was killed when a 550-pound lion escaped from an enclosure and broker her neck with one swipe of his paw. investigators believe that the five-year-old male lion lifted the door of his partially closed feeding cage with its paw. founder dale anderson says there is no evidence that hansen's death was due to her own carelessness. the founder also says that their attention should now turn to the remaining animals at the sanctuary. hansen's family is relieved to hear that she did not suffer. the autopsy shows that she was killed instantly when

>> in san jose. police say they've solved two recent murders in the city. this person is behind bars, accused of a stabbing a man to death. this is video from our helicopter partnership with abc7 news. the victim, in his twenties, was found near guadalupe oak grove park on wednesday. and an arrest also made in another murder. this woman is behind bars -- accused of stabbing her boyfriend to death in his apartment. this was the scene yesterday on ironwood drive at the hilltop manor.

the victim -- who suffered from dementia-- went missing in early february. police say at some point over the last few weeks, he showed up without anyone noticing. and was killed. this marked san jose's eighth homicide of the year. >> gary: coming of the warriors' game and colin kaepernick signing autographs. and the 49ers stadium looks great

>> state senator mark leno and other city leaders, annouced a proposed law which would require both the san francisco and san mateo county boards of supervisors. to vote on whether gun shows could be allowed at the cow palace. and he openly he admitted how both counties feel about gun shows >> "i acknowledge both counties board of supervisors have repeatedly passed resolutions unaminously urging the state not th have the gun shows at this location but i can tell you what either

borad would do five or ten or thirty years from now if there were to reach a consenious and say they wanted the gun show well that would be the voice of the people." among the speakers, one local activist who held up a c-d case with a bullet hole in it. to show how he was also a vicitim of gun violence. the cow palace sits on state property. which is why a resolution is needed to make any changes. plans already underway for a re-opening, just hours after a fire damages berkley's famous chez panisse restaurant! officials say the fire caused up to 200-thousand dollars in damage. investigators believe it was electrical wiring under the building's porch that started it. a sprinkler system inside the restaurant helped stop the fire from spreading to the rest of the building. owner alice waters hopes to reopen next weekend. an attorney representing an austistic 5 year-old says

the boy's family is filing a civil suit after charges were dropped against a special education teacher -- who had been accused of abusing her students. alexia bogdis worked at roosevelt elementary school in redwood city, when she was arrested back in 2012. the autistic child's father says the abuse allegations came from a handful of teachers aides, who ended up losing their jobs but the district attorney now says those aides have "backed off" what they told detectives originally, forcing him to drop charges. in national news. the u-s government reported that 236-thousand jobs were added in february. this means the economy has been adding jobs for three straight years now. that good news was joined with a drop in unemployment. from 7-point-9 percent to 7-

point-7 percent. both figures were better than economists had predicted. however the president warns against high hopes. until the automatic cuts are implemented.starting april 1st. >> in a rare move, former president bill clinton is pushing the supreme court to overturn an act that he signed into law. clinton says he has had a change of heart on the defense of marriage act. it's a law that defines marriage as a legal union between a man and a woman. and denies federal benefits to same-sex couples. the high court will hear arguments about whether the law is constitutional later this month. along with arguments about california's proposition 8. clinton says it was a very different time when the act reached his desk back in 1996. he says he now believes it goes against the principles of the united states constitution. >> the reverand jesse jackson made a trip to caracas venezuela to deliver a sermon during the funeral for venezuelan president hugo chavez. the reverand is calling for
